William Hughes and Quality

The demands of the customer
William Hughes Ltd send out millions of parts a year, and all of them have to be right. Different types of product need to be right in different ways, sometimes a vernier calliper, 1:1 drawing or a gauge can be enough and sometimes it takes more advanced equipment. Below, you can see the main kinds of product that we make, and the machines available to measure them:

Wireforms & Assemblies - CMM's
When you are making 3D wireforms, sometimes a gauge or 1:1 cannot measure the level of accuracy the customer wants, so a CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) will have to be used. You can use a CMM to meausure the cylinders of wire between the bends, and create a 3D map of intersection points, that is extremely accurate. Shown to the right are the 2 CMM's at William Hughes.

For example, on a wireform, you would generally need to be measuring the lengths and angles only. You may be able to use a 1:1 drawing to aid production, or have a gauge for the part. More complicated parts might need to be measured using a CMM (coordinate measuring machine), which measures intersections in 3 dimensions (shown below, left), an
