PCB Test Points and Terminal Pins for OEM Supply Chains

William Hughes produces precision-engineered PCB test points and terminal pins for critical applications across aerospace, automotive, defence, medical and industrial electronics sectors. Assembled in our UK facility, our components are specified by Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers and integrated directly into surface-mount and through-hole PCB assemblies for OEM products.

We do not supply complete circuit boards, our focus is specialised in the consistent, high-yield manufacture of testable, solder-ready pins and contact terminals, delivered in kits or reels to suit your placement and assembly line requirements. We routinely support complex, high-density boards where the yield threshold, dimensional tolerance, and surface quality of each contact must meet test coverage and signal integrity demands.

Types of PCB Terminal Pins and Test Points

PCB test points and terminal pins are small-form precision metal components designed to provide defined electrical access points on a printed circuit board. These may be for functional tests (ICT, flying probe), in-system programming, signal monitoring, or grounding.
They feature a large loop for easy probe attachments or to facilitate the clipping on of other components. Ideal for components which need frequent replacement, they are also suitable for raising hot components above the surface of the PCB.
A glass bead in a choice of eight colours for identification purposes ensures a snug fit on the board. White, yellow, black, brown, blue, pink, red and green are available ex-stock with other colours to meet special requirements. The unique shape of the test point will not damage through-plated holes during assembly yet prevents any movement prior to soldering.

Our terminal pins are manufactured in Phosphor Bronze BS 2873 Solder Tinned (RoHS Compliant) with beads made of boro silicate sintered glass, stainless steel or copper alloys, and are finished via selective plating for conductivity and solderability.

There are three sizes of test point:

  • Type 100 – Large
  • Type 200 – Small
  • Type 300 – Long Legged

How To Order

When ordering, please refer to the order code in the spec sheet which will determine the type and colour required ie 1.59mm (1/16”) board with 1.32 (0.052”) hole in black, please quote code 100-103.

Our Manufacturing Capabilities

Our processes support end-to-end terminal pin production, from prototype and low-volume development to high-throughput manufacture and automated kitting. Every pin is manufactured to tight mechanical tolerances, with tooling and jigs designed in-house to optimise repeatability and yield across production runs. We are able to hold extremely low variation thresholds thanks to our investment in automated handling, robotic welding (where applicable), and non-contact 3D inspection tools. Our terminal pins and test points are designed to serve a wide range of industries:

Automotive PCB Test Points

  • Sensor interface pins for ECUs and safety systems
  • Contact terminals for hybrid and EV battery monitoring
  • High-vibration connectors in ADAS modules

Aerospace PCB Test Points

  • EMI-shielded test points for avionics and engine monitoring
  • Miniature contact pins for UAV and satellite applications

Medical Devices PCB Test Points

  • Gold-plated contact pins for implantable electronics
  • Sterile-cleaned pins for diagnostic instrumentation

Industrial Electronics PCB Test Points

  • Terminal contacts in metering and automation systems
  • Test pins for programmable logic controllers (PLCs)

How We Improve Yield for High-Density Test Pins

A typical Tier 1 supplier for an electronics manufacturer will approach us as their PCB assembly line could be experiencing high levels of rework due to:

  • Deformation during tape-and-reel placement
  • Variable pin height affecting ICT contact
  • Inconsistent plating thickness across batches

Working closely with their R&D and quality engineering teams, we can reverse-engineer the terminal pin, introduce a jig-based robotic forming sequence and optimise the plating spec for solderability and low insertion force.

The expected result would be a measurable improvement in yield across three consecutive production batches, driven by increased forming precision and controlled handling protocols. The aim is for zero incidence of pin damage during automated reel-to-reel handling. All parts would be delivered with full traceability and batch certification in compliance with IATF 16949 and ISO 9001, providing the quality assurance necessary for high-reliability electronics applications.

Our dedicated tooling team can also reduce lead times by integrating kitting into the process, supplying full BOM trays for each board variant.

FAQs

Q1 Can William Hughes reverse engineer a legacy terminal pin from physical samples?

Yes. Our team uses high-resolution scanning and CAD modelling to replicate and improve upon existing parts, even if technical drawings are unavailable.

Q2 What is the typical lead time for a new terminal pin variant?

Standard lead times are 5–7 working days for tooling setup, with first batch outputs in 10–15 days. Express options are available.

Q3 Do you provide batch-level quality documentation?

All components are delivered with full PPAP, FAIR, and material certifications where required.

Q4 Can you provide tape-and-reel or tray loading for SMT compatibility?

Yes, we can package to your exact pick-and-place configuration, including kitting per BOM if needed.

Q5 Can William Hughes supply test points in kitted trays tailored to our BOMs?

Yes, we offer precision kitting aligned to your board variant, including tray loading by part position or grouped assemblies. This reduces pick time and human error in your SMT or manual insertion processes.

Q6 Are the terminal pins RoHS and REACH compliant?

Absolutely. All materials and surface treatments are compliant with RoHS, REACH, and conflict mineral declarations. Full documentation can be supplied with every batch.
