About William Hughes. Heritage Engineering, Modern Innovation.

British Engineering Since 1790. Future-Ready, Sustainable Manufacturing for Specialist Sectors.

William Hughes has evolved from wire specialists to trusted innovators in spring, wire form and assembly solutions. We’ve been engineering solutions since 1790 and today, our team continues that legacy, designing, prototyping and producing precision springs, wire forms and complex assemblies for some of the most demanding industries.

Our success has been based on the traditional values of a family firm’s commitment to its customers, concern for quality and a dedication to continual improvements in production and technology, with the latest in CNC, robotic and cleanroom technologies. Our facilities in the UK, Bulgaria and Poland are trusted by OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers across aerospace, automotive and medical manufacturing.

Our Legacy

William Hughes was founded in 1790 , supplying high-quality wire to the textile mills of the Industrial Revolution. As the demands of engineering evolved, so did we. By the mid-20th century, we were manufacturing precision springs and wire forms for defence, then scaling up for the automotive industry as it boomed across Europe.

Our reputation for quality and responsiveness saw us expand again, this time into aerospace and medical markets. From our earliest days to our most recent innovations, one thing that remains constant is our commitment to solving complex engineering problems with care, craft and technical excellence.

Our Key Environmental Actions

Ongoing Commitment to Environmental Responsibility

We recognise that manufacturing carries an environmental footprint, and reducing ours is an active part of how we operate, with the goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050 in line with the UK government targets.

Across all facilities, we are investing in smart, sustainable systems that reduce waste, conserve energy and minimise environmental impact.

1 – Solar power generation

• 1240kWp installed group-wide.
• 43% of UK site’s energy and 51% of the Bulgarian site’s energy is now solar-powered.

2 – Energy efficiency upgrades

• LED lighting and automated sensor systems throughout our factories.
• Energy-efficient CNC and robotic machines.

3 – Smart monitoring

• Group-wide ERP system reduces paper usage and streamlines resource management.
• Compressed air leak detection and smart metering installed.

4 – Recycling and waste reduction

• Scrap steel, cardboard, paper, plastics and aluminium cans are segregated and recycled.
• Closed-loop recycling systems support waste minimisation.

5 – Sustainable sourcing

• Preference for suppliers who can provide recycled content and disclose steel carbon footprints.
• Carbon and distance-to-plant now influence procurement decisions.

6 – Chemical management

• REACH compliant with strict handling, storage and disposal protocols.

Ongoing Sustainability Goals

• Further solar expansion, including evaluation of installations in Poland.
• Water usage reduction at the UK site.
• Rapid EV charging point installation for staff and public use.
• Increased employee participation in the Cycle to Work scheme.

This is a work in progress, but we take our environmental responsibility seriously and aim to lead by example in our sector.
